Welcome to the October 2018 OptiSurface Newsletter.

1 Million Acres Optimized!

We are excited to announce that a few months a ago we clocked over 1 million acres of optimised landform designs all around the world.

It’s been a great ride since our inception almost 10 years ago.

Thank you for being a part of the journey and your efforts at permanently improving your farms or your clients farms.

We have seen designs from over 15 countries, 20 crops in all sorts of climates, topography,  irrigated and unirrigated.

Many clients rave about how Optisurfacing their fields results in a step increase in their productivity and profitability.

Our vision, set 9 years ago, was and still is:

“25 million acres of agricultural land with improved drainage or irrigation feeding over 10 million people more than it was previously.”

We have many acres to go but momentum is growing and we will get there over the coming decades thanks to you.

Thank you again for being an ‘Innovator’ (first 2.5% of the population that adopts technology as shown in image below).   Our next 10 years will be the decade of the  “Early Adopter”.

Design Of The Month

Smoothing a Melon Hole Field
This Melon Hole field needs to be smoothed out to eliminate ponding in gilgais with reasonable earthworks.

Existing Topography

Existing Drainage Analysis
If you can't see any images here, click 'Display images..' in your email software.

Proposed Topography
The field was designed using OptiSurface 4Way allowing water to meaner across the field and exit to the boundaries. A ridge (red) subzone was used to prevent water from exiting to the west and let it follow the natural drainage path.

To reduce the large cuts, a subzone (brown) was used and the smoothing was reduced to 40 m/% while the rest of the field has the smoothing set to 100 m/%.

Proposed Cut/Fill Map

This resulted in less cuts where the brown subzones are and earthworks ended up at only 203 m3/ha.

Feature Of The Month

Smoothing Distance (m/% or ft/%)

Definition:  Defines how rapidly the slopes can change. This effectively smooths the surface so the grade changes do not change too rapidly e.g. from minimum slope to maximum slope in a short distance.

A typical value is 100 m/% (300ft/%) but depends on how much soil you want to shift versus how smooth you want the finished design. The grade changes are calculated at every grid point.

For example, if the calculation grid spacing is set to 10m, and Smoothing Distance is set to 100 m/%, then at each grid point the slope can change a maximum of 0.1% (10/100). Eg from 0.1% to 0.2% at one grid point, then the next grid point it could go from 0.2% to 0.3%, etc

Note: You need to tick the tick box ‘ON’ to adjust the value and use this constraint in the calculations.

Example:

The Cut/Fill Map shown below has the ‘Smoothing Subzones’ turned OFF to highlight the difference from the Cut/Fill Map shown above in the Design of the Month.

Areas with deep cuts and fills which are mainly due to the Smoothing Factor are lessened by reducing the Smoothing Distance.
