Welcome to the February 2019 OptiSurface Newsletter.

In our News we have released OptiSurface Designer V2.7.14.

The Design Of The Month demonstrates the design thought process for fixing ponding issues due to micro furrows.

The Feature Of The Month shows subzones and how to use them in OptiSurface 2Way.

If you have any problems or questions please reply to this email or call me on +61 405-686-425 (Australia) or Preston on +1 870-340-2020 (USA).

OptiSurface Testimonial: “Every field I have OptiSurfaced, I haven’t had to replant anything (due to drown outs). That’s pretty cool! I’ve also got rid of dozens of surface drains (inlet pipes)” – Jeff Kelly, Illinois, USA

Solving Ponding Issues From Depressions & ‘Micro Furrows’

A 38ac (16ha) field has ponding issues due to depressions which are exacerbated by micro furrows created by wheel traffic. Machinery wheel tracks create small ruts about an inch high (25mm) which restricts drainage across the traffic direction.

There are existing drainage inlet pipes in the field but the plan was to reduce the number if possible and solve the ponding issues.

See video below.

Feature Of The Month

Subzones and Slope Parameters

Overview:  Subzone is a unique feature of OptiSurface Designer wherein the designer can customize an area or section of the field. The subzone overwrites the boundary parameters allowing the designer to tell OptiSurface how the area should behave.

In the video shown above, two types of subzones are used – Ridge to define the highest points in the field and Valley subzones to define the tail drain.

Ridge: This is a special type if subzone that behaves like a barrier, preventing water to flow to the subzone. It can also apply different design parameters. Note: The ridge subzone should ideally extend to just outside the boundary zone and go back from one side of the boundary to the other to work well. Only effective when used OptiSurface 2Way and OptiSurface 4Way.

Valley: This is a special type of subzone used to guide water to flow to a desired direction. It can also apply different design parameters. Note: The valley subzone should extend to just outside the boundary zone. Only effective when used OptiSurface 2Way and OptiSurface 4Way.

Subzone Slope Parameter: The parameters in the subzone can be ticked ON to overwrite the parameters set in the boundary.

In the video above, the Cross Slope was used for the tail drains forcing it to fall in a certain direction. This is always in reference to the Main Slope Arrow. Forcing the subzone to fall in one direction requires the Min Cross Slope and Max Cross Slope defined and with the same symbol (+ or -). Only effective when used in OptiSurface 1Way and OptiSurface 2Way.
