OptiSurface Newsletter – 2023 November

OptiSurface

Welcome to the OptiSurface Newsletter for November 2023.

We Are Celebrating 2,000,000+ Acres Optimized!

We are excited to announce that last month we clocked over 2 million acres of OptiSurface designs generated all around the world.

It’s been a great ride since our inception almost 15 years ago.

Thank you for being a part of the journey and your efforts at permanently improving your farms or your clients farms.

We have seen designs from over 17 countries, 22 crops in all sorts of climates, topography,  irrigated and unirrigated.

Many clients rave about how Optisurfacing their fields results in a step increase in their productivity and profitability.

Our vision, set 14 years ago, was and still is: “25 million acres of agricultural land with improved drainage or irrigation feeding over 10 million people more than it was previously.”

We have many acres to go but momentum is growing and we will get there over the coming decades thanks to you.

As a thanks we are offering you a special deal for the month of November and December.

See our Deal of The Month below for details. If you have any problems or questions please reply to this email or call us on +61 405-686-425 (Australia) or +1 870-340-2020 (USA).

Just finished a topo for a client with a very hilly field. Only waterways are touched with a minimum of earth moving. Nice project with @OptiSurface only touching the water bottoms to make sure water can escape with minimum dirt movement.

Exaggerating Fills
Overfilling to Account for Soil Settlement

A field for drip irrigation was designed with OptiSurface 2Way. The design required heavy fills of more than 500mm and this caused a concern for the fill settlement. Normally, we recommend that the field is reworked after a few years after settlement of the fill areas and expansion of the cut areas. However, with drip irrigation there may not be an opportunity for this. So, we used the Exaggerate Cut/Fill feature in OptiSurface Designer to overfill and overcut in the deeper cuts and fills.

There was a heavy fill area to lift the depression and maximum fill is 569mm.

Proposed Topography After Fill Exaggeration

The exaggerate fill means the Proposed Topography may not drain perfectly in the first couple of years while the soil settles but it’s better than it settling and then having to put up with the problem for many more years.

Featured Software Feature

Exaggerate Cut/Fill

Overview: Exaggerates the cut and/or fill to account for soil expansion or settlement after landforming.

Displayed by: Tools > Cut/Fill > Exaggerate

Appearance:

  • Exaggerate Fills Greater than (m or ft and %) – Defines the depth of fill that will be exaggerated by the defined %.
  • Exaggerate Cuts Greater than (m or ft and %) – Defines the depth of cut that will be exaggerated by the defined %.
  • Rebalance – Tick this ON to rebalance the earthworks on recalculate using defined parameters as shown below.

Cut/Fill RatioCut/fill ratio = Volume of Cut / Volume of Fill. It is the same as the ratio used in Landform Design.
Fill to Import (m3 or ft3) – Add in a value other than 0 if there are fills to be imported into the field.
Cut to Export (m3 or ft3) – Add in a value other than 0 if there are cuts to be exported out of the field.
Adjust Breaklines – Tick this ON to and allow the breaklines to shift vertically to balance the earthworks.

Note. This tool is mostly used to exaggerate only the fills to account for settlement after landforming.

As an example, if the fill at a point was 300mm after a landform design calculation, then based on the settings in the dialog in the image above the fill will be increased by 10% (30mm) to 330mm. This % exaggeration would be applied at each grid point over the designed area if cut or fills are greater than the threshold which is 100mm fill and 0mm cut in the example above.
