Smooth Curves

Removed Potholes With Just 145 m3/ha Earthworks

Location: Queensland, Australia
Field Area: 115 ha or 284 acres
Irrigation: Furrow Irrigation
Crops: Sugarcane

Background

This 115 hectare field has scattered pot holes around the field.  It needs considerable smoothing to avoid the pot holes but still follow the lay of the land to minimize top soil movement.

Conclusion

An OptiSurface1D design has been calculated to drain water down the field to the southeast direction Following the natural topography of the field. Significant smoothing was applied in the main slope and cross slope directions and maximum grades were limited to 1%. This resulted in smooth design surface with earthworks of 145 m3/ha (76 yd3/acre).
